Belmont Church looks ahead to next 100 years
In a way, Phil Kendrick joined Belmont Church even before he was born. His father joined Belmont Church as a law student at Vanderbilt University in 1950 and then raised his three children in the church.
Belmont is basically the only church Ive ever known, he said. I have old, dear friends Ive known there for 40 years, so its home, and I can say Ive been there for half of its existence.
Thats very special.
Kendrick and the rest of Belmonts 1,600-member congregation are celebrating a milestone this month and all year: its 100th anniversary.
Started by a small group of Nashvillians at the corner of 16th and Grand avenues in 1911, Belmont began as a series of evangelical tent meetings, according to church history.
A foundation for a building wasnt laid until 1915, said the Rev. Brian Wade, lead pastor at the church.
This group actually bought a church, sawed it in two and carried it back to 16th and Grand, where they built it atop the foundation in 1915, said Wade, a southern Davidson County resident who has served as pastor for three years.
That original foundation remains to this day under the churchs conference center.
Originally affiliated with the Churches of Christ, today Belmont Church is nondenominational. Its pastors come from Church of Christ, Presbyterian, Lutheran, Baptist, Assembly of God, Episcopalian, Catholic and charismatic backgrounds.
After growing up in the church, Kendrick raised his own children there five boys ranging in age from 18 to 27.
At 54, he can still remember being a teenager at the church in 1971, when the congregation welcomed a new pastor, Don Finto.
Before he came, it was a small church with mostly elderly members, and I think that my brother, sister and I were the only teens there, said Kendrick, a Brentwood attorney and church elder.
Everything changed after that. Membership exploded, and there were a lot of younger people that came. I remember being excited to see those other kids come in.
The church at 68 Music Square East holds three worship services a week 6 p.m. on Saturdays and 9 and 11 a.m. on Sundays.
Basically, weve just been thanking God for 100 years, Wade said. Weve survived World Wars I and II and made it through the Great Depression.
In the 50s, I like to joke that they made it through Elvis and the Beatles, then they made it through Vietnam and all the wars and troubles since then. I just thank God we are still thriving.

“This is who we are,” Wade said. “I hope, in the next 100 years, we can still be a thriving church and be a part of what God is doing in Nashville and the world.” For Kendrick, a goal for the next 100 years is to grow church membership.
