Fire-risk hair dryers recalled

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department issued the advisory yesterday after Philips Electronics Hong Kong alerted it to a safety problem while also announcing a voluntary recall.

A similar recall of models was issued in the mainland, Korea and Taiwan.

"According to Philips, the hair dryers in question may in very rare cases get overheated if left connected to the power supply for a prolonged period," the department said.

"They pose a potential fire risk even when switched off and not in use."

The recalled models are Philips Salon Essential Hairdryer Model HP4931 and Philips SalonDry Travel Hairdryer Model HP 4940. They were manufactured between February 2008 and January 2011.

About 310,000 and 175,000 of the two types of hair dryers are subject to the recall in South Korea and China respectively.

Figures were unavailable for Hong Kong.

A Consumer Council spokeswoman said the body has not been informed of the recall.

Those who take their hair dryers to Philips centers will be offered a free replacement.
