Zumba Fitness: The Basics
In a typical session, a certified Zumba instructor can cover dance styles that include Merengue, Cumbia, Salsa, Cha Cha, and even Rancheras! That's not to say that you have to have any training in any of these dance styles to enjoy the class. Zumba is not a dance class. It is an aerobic activity. The classes are meant to get your heart rate up and to keep it that way for the hour-long session. Zumba classes are offered at many gyms, though you may have to pay an additional fee. For just a few dollars you can pay for an individual session and try it out or you can purchase multiple sessions at a discounted rate. An advantage to taking the class at a gym is that you can incorporate weight or resistance training to your workout. Instead of having to go back to the gym on a separate day you can do both all on one day. Master Dance Technique with Latin Dance Lessons
Master Dance Technique with Latin Dance Lessons
Through Latin dance lessons, the hip action of the rumba, the spiciness of the salsa and the rhythm of the cha cha cha can be learned along with other steps and dances. Latin dances are full of passion to the point of being lusty. A dance class is the best way of mastering dancing techniques. An instructor guides the students on how to improve their moves. What are the Latin dances that can be learned in these classes? A description of some of these dances is below.
Types of Latin Dances
Rumba
The rumba comes from Cuba and other Caribbean Islands. This dance is done with two steps quickly done and one step done slowly. However, the ballroom version loves to emphasize romantic, slower movements done with a lot of hip movement. The Latin dance lessons help immensely when trying to learn these movements.
Salsa
The salsa comes from the Caribbean with some African influences. A couple dances it using two steps quickly performed followed by a slower step and ended with a tap or pause. The couples add enhancements to these basic steps too with turns and other movements. Taking a dance class really spices up the salsa.
Cha Cha Cha
The cha cha cha has its origins in Cuba. It is made up of one step forward or back with shifting weight from one foot to the other and then a quick three steps are taken to the side. This dance also starts on the second beat. Most Latin dance classes will include this dance in the lineup.
Mambo
The mambo originated in Cuba, but also was danced in Mexico and New York. It uses a three-beat step either performed forward or back. One partner does the forward while the other one is doing the back. During this step the weight is shifted between the feet. The swaying of the hips is really what gives this dance its feel. Many a dance class will work on this hip action to perfect it.
Merengue
This is a Dominican dance and is done with two beats. It is danced in couples. Step to the inside of the foot then roll it to transfer the weight, now drag the other foot up to meet it. The couples dance this while moving front, back and to the side.
Bachata
This dance also originated in the Dominican Republic. It is done with a four-beat pattern done side to side, this means three steps to one side and then a pause. This pause usually is accentuated by hip movements. The whole body should be used to perform this, not just steps.
