What more can I say? Descendents killed it. Period. No question about it.
Somewhere just before 10 p.m., the crowd became thicker, and Milo Aukerman, Stephen Egerton, Karl Alvarez, and Bill Stevenson took the stage, Milo speaking of the hamburger they all just indulged a bit earlier called the "Fire Cracker Burger" and that a trashcan was sitting backstage just in case.
Opening with the anthem "Descendents", the crowd suddenly became a fury of fists, beer cans and cell phones. It was really great to be able to see these guys still be on top of their shit after all these years, playing so well and tight together and Milo's voice was in great shape, obviously having recovered from his voice loss in London last month.
The classics: You know them... "My Dad Sucks", "Myage", "I'm the One", "All-O-Gistics", "Silly Girl", "Hope", "Suburban Home", "Van", "I'm Not a Loser" and "I Wanna Be a Bear", among many in the middle of the set. (I was fairly drunk, but can remember most things here.)
When it seemed they reached some sort of break point, Milo stated the next song they were going to play had never been played live before, and ripped into "Shattered", an awesome song from the soundtrack to the surf movie The Show , and definitely a song i did not see coming, but I'm pretty sure I was one of the few people that knew what that song was and glad I was there to witness it.
Going off stage after "I Don't Wanna Grow Up", the crowd became louder and cheered for more songs. No one was leaving. It seemed that no one was going to move until they heard every last fucking Descendents song in the book. Unwillingly, the guys came back out and tore into "Thank You", a song everyone seemed happy to sing along with and ending with the amazing "Clean Sheets". Milo then thanked the crowd and said that they had a great time and were glad to be able to make it out, and would (and I quote Milo saying this) "BE BACK!"
There's no denying any reminiscent or nostalgic sentiment when it comes to the Descendents. Their set in Las Vegas acknowledged that with complete acceptance. From the "firecracker burger" comments, to the obviously "ironic" reading of the All-O-Gistics, The Descendents playing live that night seemed to realize exactly what they are, and what they were invited to do there. Which is a phenomenally gifted, and historic band playing a rare, draw card set. As Chadreligion has stated in other words, they did not disappoint. as much as Milo seemed to gain some pounds (c'mon.. you know he's had his fair share of firecracker burgers) he, and the rest of the band did not lose any enthusiasm. They consistently played with the same sense of fun and fervor throughout the whole set. Glad I saw it before I got shithoused at the end of the night.. totally another story like everyone else. All said, Descendents get two thumbs up.

If I’d wanted to make the backstory the movie, I would have!” is about a down on his luck writer, Ben Sanderson, in Los Angeles that is deep in the throes of alcoholism. Ben is enticed to move to Las Vegas by the city’s 24-hour easy access to alcohol. Ben will utilize this easy access to alcohol to its fullest, as he plans to literally drink himself to death. While in Las Vegas he meets a prostitute named Sera, and a very unconventional romance ensues. As if that story isn’t poignant enough, add to it John O’Brien’s real life battles with alcoholism and you’ll discover a new level of pathos.
We heard you would begin filming Leaving Las Vegas this fall. I realize the film may be quite different from John’s novel, but I Can’t help feeling a deep personal attachment. Ben is a thinly veiled self portrait of John. My family and I are anticipating Hollywood’s interpretation of John’s novel with a strange, melancholy pride. : From Book to Movie The movie follows the novel rather closely, particularly on the point that John was most concerned about, No Feel Good Happy Ending. However, there are some differences. In the book Sera is the more primary character, while Ben is clearly the primary character in the movie. In the book, Ben doesn’t really appear until page 59, in a 189 page book. I say “really appear” because when I mentioned this to Erin, who has read the book ten times versus my single close reading, she pointed to a passage on page 4 in the book where Sera sees a staggering drunk collapse directly in front of her. The next time Ben and Sera meet is page 139, where Sera reminds Ben: “You Know I saw you last week,” she says taking another exploratory step, “I saw you fall down on the sidewalk” They have a mere 50 pages together in the novel.
