From living room to the jungle
The quartet, led by Singaporean pianist/organ maestro Jeremy Monteiro, is actually part of a larger band, but for the festival the band was stripped down to a four-member power jazz band featuring Monteiro on Hammond organ, Asia's foremost guitarist and a major jazz composer Eugene Pao from Hong Kong, saxophonist Tots Tolentino of the Philippines and Thailand's own Chanutr Techatana-nan on drums.The band began the first of two sets, with a slow, moody groove that built up, driven by Monteiro's Jimmy Smithesque organ riffs (it's so nice to hear that wonderful Hammond organ sound in a jazz combo), Pao's guitar licks and Techatana-nan's hard drum beats. I think this song was called Carrot Cake and it was pretty tasty.
The highlights for me were several songs that featured some great call-and-response playing between Tolentino and Pao, Pao and Monteiro, and some great solos from Pao and Tolentino. Several Eugene Pao compositions were outstanding, including Offside and Making Soul. I particularly liked both Pao's understated but fluid playing and Tolentino's mellifluous runs and riffs. The organ swirled around these two players, providing a solid sonic backdrop for adventurous solos. The band members also showed their chops on covers of jazz standards, the highlight of which for me was Burt Bacharach's This Guy's In Love With You.
The band has now finished its four-day stint at The Living Room and if you missed these fine musicians, try to catch one of their gigs in the region - great sound, excellent musicianship and some surprising original songs. Well worth checking out.
The DJ duo from the popular Bangkok Paradise nights, Chris Menist and Maft Sai have gone into the promotion business and will be hosting a performance by one of the stars of the recently released compilations of 1960s and 1970s leftfield luk thung selected by the duo, Dao Bandon. He is the composer/writer of the mor lam song Mae Jom Ka Lon, which has proved very popular with Bangkok paradise regulars. An interesting documentary series on American popular music, A Journey Through American Music is currently being broadcast locally on True Visions cable TV. The series traces the development of the blues, according to blurb for the series, and the documentaries presented cover mainly African-American music, "from the early fusion of gospel, rhythm and blues and soul music, through to modern rock and rap".
