Time to stay with proven leadership; vote Pike, Jensen, Elfo and Louws

Difficult economic times require steady leadership from executives well versed in community operations. We endorse Dan Pike for Bellingham mayor, Gary Jensen for Ferndale mayor, Jack Louws for Whatcom County executive and Bill Elfo for Whatcom County sheriff in the Aug. 16 primary election.

Mayors Pike and Jensen and Sheriff Elfo have shown sound leadership in their tenures. We trust their leadership will continue to make Whatcom County and its cities the wonderful places we cherish. Louws, Lynden's former mayor and CEO of Louws Truss, brings a history of executive leadership and understanding of county needs vital to the executive's post. Each of these candidates faces two or three opponents in the primary, including government employees and well-known legislators we have endorsed in other elections.

The two candidates in each race who receive the most votes in the primary will face each other in the Nov. 8 general election. Other city, school and special district races also will be on the November ballot.

Pete Kremen is not running for re-election as county executive but will appear on the November ballot in the race for the District 1, Position B seat on the Whatcom County Council.

Running for county executive against Louws are longtime legislator Doug Ericksen, who was elected in 2010 to the state Senate from the 42nd district; Tom Anderson, a business owner and former general manager of the Whatcom County Public Utility District; and David Stalheim, former Whatcom County planning director and current block grant program manager for the city of Bellingham.

Pike is challenged by former state representative Kelli Linville, land-use consultant and writer Clayton Petree and commercial real estate broker Steve Moore.

Jensen faces challenges from Ferndale City Council members Lloyd Zimmerman and Brent Goodrich and newcomer Norbert Rojsza.

Whatcom County Sheriff's deputies Bob Taylor and Steve Harris are challenging Elfo.

In meeting with the candidates, it's clear they all have a passion for service and for their communities. However, we disagree with many challengers that our current leaders should be replaced. We heard few viable options for change and many promises that challengers would quickly be "up to speed" once in office.

We believe our current officials are on the right track and are positioned to continue making progress to improve Whatcom County's economy and protect the sometimes-competing values of its residents. Progress is not served by new leaders needing to study and reconsider plans under way. Now is the time for proven executive leadership.
