Grease Lightning strikes with line of motorcycles

BATAVIA — With gasoline prices hovering around the $4 mark, consumers have turned to smaller cars, hybrid cars and public transportation in an effort to save some of their hard-earned dollars.

With that in mind, Ben Thompson, owner of the Grease Lightning “speedy oil change” chain, has expanded his operation. Grease Lightning Motorsports opened in April and features the Johnny Pag Motorcycles line of custom-made two-wheelers.

“We offer some great new full-size bikes that look like big cruisers but get 65 miles per gallon (of gas),” said Thompson, whose company is the authorized dealer of the Johnny Pag brand in Western New York. “And they’re priced in such a way that you’d save enough in fuel economy to pay for the bike.”

The cruisers, which range from 300cc to 140 cubic inches, can be seen at Thompson’s Oil Doctor (soon to be Grease Lightning) location at 4003 West Main Street Rd.

The Johnny Pag models — they’re called Spyder, Barhog, Pro Street and Raptor-X — start at around $3,900, and offer “power and comfort” along with gas savings, Thompson noted.

“The 300cc entry level machine has more horsepower than most 300cc cycles, resulting in as much spunk as a 650cc,” he said. “At the high end, our 140 cubic inch cruiser compares favorably to Harleys, most of which are 88 to 96 cubic inches.”

Thompson said Johnny Pag motorcycles are built with the average person in mind.

“We’re not targeting those who would buy a Harley, but a whole different market — entry level, women, students; anybody on a budget.”

Thompson has brought P.J. Farrell of Hamburg on board to oversee all of Grease Lightning’s ancillary ventures, including the motorsports, used cars and truck rental divisions. Farrell is a longtime motorcycle enthusiast — he currently is a member of the Patriot Guard Riders — and worked for Goodyear Tire for more than 25 years.

Farrell said their research revealed that Western New York is one of the top markets for cruisers in the United States, and that this year, despite the high fuel prices, sales of motorcycles are up 20 percent and sales of scooters are up 50 percent from last year.

“We will be selling the bikes and providing NYS inspections at this location, but we can service them at any of our sites,” Farrell said.

Thompson owns Grease Lightning or Castrol Premium Lube shops in Batavia, Warsaw, Geneseo, Rochester, Hamburg, Geneva, Dunkirk, Corning, Binghamton and Maine.

Wash and trim eggplant 3 or 4, depending on the size. Cut into slices about 1 cm thick and arrange in layers in a colander, sprinkle each layer with coarse salt, without going beyond it would be too salty. Let stand for about 1 hour in order to expel all the water. Place a small bowl with a weight on top to speed up the process.

Meanwhile, in a pan, put a chopped onion in a dash of extra virgin olive oil. Sauté and add a bottle of tomato sauce. Allow to cook until the sauce has thickened. At the end add salt and 2 basil leaves.

Remove the eggplant, rinse and dry thoroughly with a clean cloth.

Put a drop of oil for frying in a pan and fry the aubergines until they are golden on both sides, let them dry on a paper towel.

Slice mozzarella and distribute a few slices on the sauce.

Put the parmesan in the oven at 200 degrees for 45 minutes.
Parmigiana can be served cold.
