WEYMOUTH: 'Exceptional' arrangements to cope with `Olympic visitors

A key element will be using nearly 1,800 spaces at the Swannery, Park Street and Lodmoor extension car parks to support Olympic funded park and ride services for visitors with daily visitor numbers expected to double to 60,000.

Two sites near Dorchester and three more north and east of Weymouth will be able to handle up to 10,000 vehicles.

But the park and ride service will need 120 shuttle buses to bring visitors to and from central Weymouth, arrivals having to walk from the centre to the Nothe viewing area or free Beach Live site. Disabled people will be collected and taken to the Nothe.

Residents and hotels with parking permits may find their spaces needed, so 83 spaces at the Governors Lane and Royal Yard car parks are being set aside to help them between July 25th-August 14th.

A meeting of Weymouth and Portland’s management committee also agreed that council owned land and buildings could be made available for short term Olympic use “if they are suitable, available and surplus to operational requirements”. This includes Pavilion area facilities.

Members further agreed that land at Furzy Cliff could be used for an on-land interpretation facility for the Nowhere Island project, an artist-made floating “island” moored nearby in Weymouth Bay, for the South West Cultural Olympiad.

A report to the meeting said that these “exceptional” arrangements were needed to ensure park and ride worked efficiently, visitor vehicle numbers coming into the town centre were minimised and that seafront priority went to pedestrians not traffic.

Vice-chairman Councillor Peter Chapman said: “All this is inevitably going to inconvenience everyone to a degree but it is about striking a balance.”

Transport spokesman Councillor Christine James said she was working as hard as she could to ensure residents and other permit holders displaced from their usual sites would be “given the best places they can be”.

Special projects spokesman Councillor Howard Legg said: “In addition to the Olympic sailing the Cultural Olympiad is a huge undertaking with numerous events being planned across the borough.

Free parking spaces are offered at The Nook Hotel on the esplanade, however these spaces are on a location near the hotel and not on the hotel grounds. The George Hotel, which is a five minute walk from the beach offers free parking spaces on site.

The Redcliff Hotel at Brunswich terrace provides numerous parking spaces for free. Valentine Guest House which is just a five minute walk from the beach provides free parking spaces to guests however these spaces are at a location nearby the hotel and a reservation is needed. Maden Guest House offers limited spaces to guests, located on site at the hotel.
