Day care = better standardized test scores
BOGOTA, June 20 (UPI) -- Formal preschool program or licensed daycare is better for a child's cognitive development than care by a relative or friend, a Colombian researcher says.
Raquel Bernal of the Universidad de los Andes in Columbia and Michael Keane of the University of New South Wales in Sydney took advantage of changes made in the 1990s to U.S. welfare laws that encouraged single mothers to enter the workforce.
Before the changes, about 59 percent of single U.S. mothers worked outside the home, but by 2001, that number increased to 72 percent, the researchers said. The researchers compared test scores for U.S. children ages 3-6 born shortly before and after the law change.
The study, scheduled to be published in the July issue of the Journal of Labor Economics, found overall that use of childcare reduces a child's test scores significantly, but when the researchers divided the children into those who received daycare vs. care by a relative or friend, they found that the reduction in tests scores was driven solely by children cared for by relatives.
Formal care -- formal preschool program or a licensed day-care center -- was found to have no adverse effect on test scores, Bernal said.
A male black and white colobus monkey, shown with his mother, was born at the Saint Louis Zoo’s Primate House on May 20, it was announced June 21, 2011. The monkey is the first colobus to be born at the Zoo in 11 years. Colobus infants are born with all white hair and a pink face. In contrast, adults are primarily black, with white hair encircling their face and half of their tail. They have a distinctive mantle of long white hair extending from their shoulders around the edge of their back. Infants will change color gradually until they reach adult coloration at about six months. UPI/Saint Louis Zoo © 2011 United Press International, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Home daycare or daycare center for an infant? | Starting a daycare ...
I have a 7 week old baby that will be going to daycare soon when I return to work. I visited a home daycare and thought it might be nice for my son. But the lady that runs it currently only had 1 child in the daycare and has a 13 year old daughter. From talking to her she seemed like she knew what she was doing and would be good with children.
My mom ran her own home daycare for most of my life and when I told her about this daycare she seemed very against me putting him in a home daycare, which surprised me, since that’s what she did. She was telling me to be careful that the lady doesn’t let the other child near my son because she might hurt him, watch that she doesn’t try to leave the baby with her 13 year old daughter and that the baby would be exposed to anyone the lady lets in her home. She kept having negatives to say about it so I asked “so are you saying a center would be better?”
She said yes because the people in centers are required to have more training, babies stay in a nursery, and that they would probably communicate with me in writing about how he’s doing during the day. I actually thought a home daycare would be good because he might get more personal attention than a center, which would have way more children and more people coming in and out. So he might possibly get sick more often being around so many other children. But my mom was saying unless I know the daycare provider really well already don’t go with a home daycare. It really surprised me that my mom was so against a home daycare since that’s the type of business she ran. Any thoughts or suggestions on home daycare versus a daycare center for an infant??? Sounds like everyone agrees with daycare centers being best. I do know from when my mom had a daycare that even at a home daycare they are required to have background checks for anyone living in the home and CPR training for anyone involved in the daycare in order for it to be licensed. But everyone is bringing up good points. Thanks!

Answer by Mrs Adorkable Does she have any formal training? Is she infant CPR certified? Does she have a background check for herself AND everyone who will be around your baby?
In home daycares are great for more one on one attention for baby. But you really have to be picky about which home you pick, because there are horror stories about things happening in peoples homes!
