Only thing sweeter than music in Olathe is the corn

Focus on Aaron Tippin

If you like country music, patriotic songs, truck-driving songs or simply want to support a singer who supports the troops, don’t miss Aaron Tippin when he headlines at the Olathe Sweet Corn Festival in August.

Tippin first toured for the troops during Desert Storm, after his first hit single, “You’ve got to Stand for Something.” Since then, he’s also penned and sang, “Where the Stars and Stripes and the Eagle Fly,” and “Kiss This.” His music is as popular as ever with the troops.

Tippin will spend the summer on tour, and he’ll make two visits to western Colorado. He’ll be in Rifle on July 8 and 9 as part of Garfield County’s annual air show. The two-day air show is a celebration of the newly completed air field. Tippin performs Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Tippin was chosen as the artist for Saturday’s show at the Olathe Sweet Corn Festival in part because of his devotion and passion for supporting U.S. military troops.

“Our entire Saturday is a salute to the military,” said festival organizer Bobbi Sale. “Aaron Tippin fits right into that. He does a lot for the military.”

Tippin will be the headline act on Saturday, August 6, at 9 p.m.

What: The Olathe Sweet Corn Festival

The Olathe Sweet Corn Festival is all about two Cs, according to festival organizer Bobbi Sale — corn and the concerts.

The festival usually goes through about 70,000 ears of corn, which is given away free at the festival. There’s an official corn-eating contest as well as dozens of unofficial corn-eating contests that take place throughout the day between friends and family members.

This year, the festival will take place over two days, with concerts Friday, Aug. 5 and Saturday, Aug. 6. Friday evening’s performers will be The Guess Who, which made its mark on rock and roll with songs such as “American Woman,” “These Eyes,” and “No Sugar Tonight.” Country music star Aaron Tippin will perform on Saturday.

“We want to offer something for everyone,” Sale said. “We anticipate getting two different crowds for the different concerts.”

Although the number of days and the number of concerts has gone up, the cost of the festival has not.

“It’s possible to come to both days for $19, which is the same price as the one-day price last year,” Sale said.
