On the right track

For years, motocross enthusiasts in Hillsborough County had to travel to either Sunshine Motocross in Clearwater or Dade City Motocross in Pasco County to get their fix.

With the opening of East Bay Motocross almost a year ago, they hit pay dirt in their own backyard.

"We're the first legally built motocross track in Hillsborough County," said Mike Parisi, co-owner of East Bay Motocross along with his wife, Michelle, and fellow rider Sal Ginabreda.

East Bay Motocross — 6334 Burts Road — is in what used to be a parking lot on the grounds of East Bay Raceway Park. The business opened on Aug. 13 and has attracted riders from all over the Tampa Bay area.

"I'd say this track is a big change of pace from what you usually see," said Ricky Renner, a Brandon-based professional motocross rider. "It's a bit more of a supercross style (track); more jumps, less mellow, but still safe."

Motocross is typically a cross country motorcycle or all-terrain vehicle race over a closed course featuring rough terrain, steep hills and sharp curves. Supercross tracks feature higher jumps and other obstacles.

Parisi and his wife first got involved with the sport about six years ago.

"I was looking for a hobby or a recreational sport that kept me in shape, but also provided a boost in adrenaline," he said.

In that time, Parisi — a New Jersey native who has lived in Tampa for six years — was never happy with the motocross tracks in the state.

"Florida is known for sandy tracks, which is harder on the bikes and more physically demanding for the rider," Parisi said.

During his time riding across the state, Parisi met Ginabreda, who had a contact at East Bay Raceway.

"I had a background in business, and Sal had a background in construction, plus he's been riding more than 15 years," Parisi said.

A little more than two years ago, they met with the owner of East Bay Raceway Park and set the wheels in motion for the opening of East Bay Motocross.

The process involved satisfying the noise pollution concerns of the county's Environmental Protection Commission, as well as importing 1,800 loads of hard-pack dirt and clay for the track.

"I'm a bit OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) on the details of the track," Ginabreda said. "It's paid off because we've gotten a really good reputation really fast."

East Bay Motocross hosts open practice on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday nights. There is usually a gate fee for both spectators and riders, but prices and times vary. Novice riders can learn the sport during Motocross School on Tuesday nights. Parisi said riders have ranged from semi-pros to 4-year-olds since the track opened.
