LAURENT D'ENTREMONT: Acadian dinner and Yarmouth's whalers
BY LAURENT D’ENTREMONT
Every spring, the Acadian Village of Nova Scotia, in Yarmouth County, organizes a dinner theatre as a fundraiser. This year’s production saluted the French Shore's attempt at whale fishing. I remember those “whaling days” very well, and wrote about it many years ago.
The dinner theatre was called “Les Aventures du Cape Mary” (The Adventures of the Cape Mary). Based on a true story, in 1965 the Canadian government, in an attempt to start a whaling industry, provided a grant to equip the fishing vessel Cape Mary with a spear gun, crow’s nest and whatever else was necessary to go whaling in the waters off Yarmouth and Digby counties. Capt. Harvey d’Eon was the skipper of the Cape Mary, a wooden vessel 65 feet in length. The crew Capt. D’Eon picked were all from West Pubnico: Kenneth d’Entremont, Gabriel (Gaby) d’Entremont, Fidelis (Fed) d’Entremont, Resther d’Entremont, Alfred d’Entremont, Gerald d’Eon and Allen d’Eon as cook.
The captain and some of the crew went as observers aboard two Norwegian whaling ships off Blandford, N.S. for their training. The types of whales for market were the mature fin whales, 50 feet and longer, and the minke whale, smaller in size. They did get some whales; however, as it turned out profit-wise, they did not “kill the whale.”
The Cape Mary did not have a ground crew, and the regular fishing crew had to do all the shore work as well, slowing down production. Most other fisheries have fish plant workers doing this work. The Department of Health also wanted a covered building for processing with a slipway for winching the whale inside. Comeau Seafoods Ltd. of Saulnierville, Digby Co., involved in this venture, felt the profit from whaling did not justify the cost of complying with the Department of Health’s requirements; thus ended the local whaling fishery.
The dinner theatre’s evening began with a frustrated Captain Harvey on the wharf, the crew late as usual and the tide not waiting. Soon, they arrived in their rubber boots and fishing garbs, carrying duffle bags and ready for work, the vessel’s fuel tanks filled, grub in the galley, water barrels full. The fishing boat casts its lines and sailed away. They had hardly left shore when the antiquated marine band radio, crackling static, received a message from Captain Fuzi of the Pubnico Pal a whale had been sighted near Seal Island. In the next scene, one man was in the crow’s nest, straining his eyes through field glasses to spot the elusive whale. The fog was as thick as pea soup. Another message came from the Pubnico Pal: as was often the case, the Cape Mary was receiving but the Pubnico Pal could not hear the answer. This made for a humorous conversation, and the audience howled with laughter.
