Celebrating King James Version
At 400 years old today, the King James Version of the Bible cannot claim the most read status, which belongs to the New International Version, or the most simplified, which goes to the Good News Bible.Yet, it, too, has turfs on which no other version can compete. One of these, about which there’s no dispute at all, is its influence on the English language. Today’s reader will likely complain that the language in KJV (different from the New KJV) is archaic, which it rightly is.
But he or she will be rehashing a complaint as old as the hills because this bible was archaic to many readers four centuries ago when it was first published. It hasn’t become archaic as English has undergone inevitable modifications and modernisation to look and sound much simpler.
Ironically, however, it’s upon the “nobility and dignity of the language” as an unnamed scholar has noted, achieved, according to Boyd Tonkin, by consciously giving it “a melodic, otherworldly splendour” on which its endurance rests. It’s the reason the bible has morphed from simply a religious text into, Tonkin again, “a masterpiece of English prose.”
Tonkin has reviewed Gordon Campbell’s highly praised book Bible: The Story of the King James Version 1611-2011 for the UK’s Independent newspaper in which he, Campbell, has written that the KJV “is the most celebrated book in the English-speaking world”.
Another reviewer in the UK’s The Guardian newspaper noted, it is today the all-time bestselling book in the English language and is one of very few texts that have continuously remained in print for 400 years.
The BBC reported of it in January that, “No other book, or indeed any piece of culture, seems to have influenced the English language as much as the King James Bible.”
While according to The Phrase Finder, an online site containing the meanings and origins of over 1,600 English sayings, phrases, idioms and expressions, the Bible “has been enormously influential in the development of the English language. It ranks with the complete works of Shakespeare and the Oxford English Dictionary as one of the cornerstones of the recorded language.”
To its credit, the KJV has originated, or popularised, 257 phrases in contemporary English idiom. Many of these are so part and partial of daily speech even here in Uganda for many people who might never have opened it. For instance, it is possible to weave a narrative about our newly elected political leaders on the back of idioms that trace back to the KJV.

The best way to read might be in the slow, listening method of monks who primarily read the Bible to hear what God is telling them today. It is not a reading or study using academic methods to acquire information. Scripture is for lectio divina , the slow prayerful reading when we are prepared to stop when God speaks to our heart.
