World War II hero Bo Foster honored at Missoula memorial service
Bo Foster's success didn't end with the German surrender in World War II - although it was then, as an Army pilot, that he flew Hermann Goering - the designated successor to Adolf Hitler - to Army headquarters in Augsburg, Germany.
It didn't end in peacetime either, when he started Missoula's first National Guard - the 443rd field artillery battalion at Fort Missoula.
And it didn't end in retirement from the military, when he founded the Rocky Mountain Museum of Military History at Fort Missoula.
Even in his late 90s, he continued to receive military honors - as in 2009, when he was awarded the Legion of Honor Chevalier - France's highest military honor - for actions in the 1944 Allied invasion of southern France.
"The spirit of his life will live on through so many community institutions," said Tate Jones, executive director of the Museum of Military History.
Brig. Gen. Mayhew "Bo" Foster died three months ago at the Village Senior Residence in Missoula at the age of 99.
His memorial service Tuesday afternoon at the Western Montana State Veterans Cemetery - also something Foster helped bring to Missoula - brought friends, family and fellow veterans together, not just to remember Foster as a soldier, but as a gentleman and a friend.
Some spoke of youthful memories with Foster in the military or at the University of Montana, one spoke of their Monday Night Football group, another of Foster's continued thoughtfulness through his stint at the senior living home she ran. All agreed his memory would live on.
"Bo was a great man that did great things, and he's influenced us all in some manner," said Foster's grandson, Chris Korkalo. Foster's story should be passed down so others can also be inspired by him, he said.
"Because the world needs more Bo Fosters."
In Missoula, Foster's legacy isn't hard to find. His footsteps can be found in the military museum, Fort Missoula, the Missoula Rotary Club, and even the 9-1-1 emergency system - which he helped to start in 1976.
And those footsteps continue on today, both in the Missoula community and in the same place where Foster began his legacy - in war.
Jones said there are now 600 members of the Montana National Guard serving in Iraq, and several other units currently in Afghanistan, and they're all continuing Foster's legacy of service.
Jones estimates there are still an ample number of living World War II veterans in western Montana, and as they're aging, they are being replaced with a new generation of veterans - those serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. And with new generations of veterans comes a continued legacy of service.

Little-Known Black History Fact: Bo Diddley
Ellas Otha Bates, known to the world as Bo Diddley, was considered by many to be the originator of rock and roll. He designed the Rhumba style called “hambone” and “Shave and a haircut, two bits.” Diddley’s style was later duplicated by artist Elvis Presley and later sampled by U2, George Michael and Heavy D. Diddley once said that his largest regret was the royalties he never received from artist samples. On Nov. 20, 1955, Diddley appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and was asked to sing Tennessee Ernie Ford's hit, "Sixteen Tons." Instead, when he appeared on Sullivan's stage, he sang "Bo Diddley." According to Diddley, an incensed Sullivan said “that I was one of the first colored boys to ever double-cross him; said that I wouldn't last six months." He was banned from further appearances on the show. Among the icons serving as Diddley’s inspiration were John Lee Hooker, Louis Jordan and Muddy Waters, who he performed with over his career. He’s also one of the first male artists to include women in his band, including musicians Norma-Jean Wofford, Peggy Jones, Cornelia Redmond and Debby Hastings. A Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, Diddley was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
