Festival provides special moments

What can't be enumerated in any way is the life-altering experience one can have sitting in the Adams Theater enjoying a Shakespeare production. When I was 9-years-old, and a student at East Elementary, Fred C. Adams brought a cast of actors with him for an assembly that featured the costumes worn by the actors. He explained the fashions of the Elizabethan time, including the corsets, tight bodices and farthingale (hoop skirt) that women wore with layers of petticoats that still give me an instant reaction of relief knowing that attire is past tense. Particularly, since that was just a portion of the undergarments. There were still layers of clothing over that. But what really touched my soul was my first Shakespeare play. I believe I was 11 or 12, and my grandmother purchased tickets to "The Taming of the Shrew." I experienced a wide range of emotions, with the actress portraying Katharina on her journey of pure stubborn, unruly behavior, which I cheered. I loved her defiance and couldn't wait for her give Petruchio a swift kick in the pants because I felt he was toying with her in the play, like a puppet master. I remember the actress had long, flowing red hair and had a fair complexion. She displayed vigor and strong-will tempered with gentility and softness that eventually and slowly surfaced as she grew to love Petruchio, and he fell in love with her, even to his own surprise. At that early adolescent phase in my life, I comprehended my first love story. In that moment, I matured and cried at the end of the play, longing to see more. Those experiences you cherish for a lifetime. I asked my grandmother to take me another Shakespeare play the next summer. She did, and the magic happened once more with me begging my grandmother to take me again to watch the Green Show's trademark egg dance, eat sweet tarts and suck on horehound candy. Mostly, I wanted to be seated in the open theater in the cool evening air listening intently to dialogue to follow a story line that at times had me confused but ultimately feeling deeply in ways I had never felt before. I literally grew up with the Utah Shakespeare Festival. As I developed from child to woman, I've seen - and felt - "Romeo and Juliet," "Henry V, Orthello," "Two Gentleman of Verona" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Flatwater Shakespeare's Blog News: Nothing Short of Dreamy!

Watching a cast of Flatwater regulars and newcomers perform, it struck me just how prevalent the supernatural is throughout the play (learning something new every time – a guarantee with any Shakespeare play). Magic, or the misuse of it, inevitably leads to disbelief. The fancies of love quickly become a fool’s errand. And yet, deep in the heart of the Athenian woods, Shakespeare invites us to scrap our skepticism, get lost in the language and be seduced by transformative, magical powers that only appear in the heat of the moment, just before daybreak. from the Swan to the Lincoln Foundation Gardens. The Foundation Gardens are the ideal setting for the play, and Hall has clearly taken great care in adapting the play for the space. Forget that it’s bordered by the Windstream building! Stretch your imagination just enough, and you’re bound to find yourself in a hanging garden surrounded by Roman ruins.
