Education: 6 First Coast high schools make Newsweek's top 500 list

MORE HONORS: Three Duval County high schools and three St. Johns County high schools made Newsweek's list of the top 500 public schools in the nation. From Duval, Stanton College Preparatory (4), Douglas Anderson School for the Arts (129) and Paxon School for Advanced Studies (170) made the list. From St. John's County's Nease (208), Creekside (237) and Bartram Trail (292) high schools were ranked.

CHANGE AGENT:  "Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said if Congress does not reauthorize and amend the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA)-popularly known as No Child Left Behind-he will take actions to amend the law himself. A clause in the law permits the secretary of education to waive certain parts of the act-a power Duncan said he would consider use if states agree to enact reforms. Given Duncan's past statements, it's likely he would reduce or eliminate sanctions for schools that didn't meet the reading and math proficiency benchmark."  Read more at US News & World Report

Great job! I am so proud of these schools. Now, instead of the Duval County School Board attempting to dismantle the magnet system, perhaps they should be trying to fix the schools that are failing. The magnets are not to blame. Stop trying to make everyone believe that all of the other schools would magically improve if the magnet students were forced to attend their neighborhood schools. That is simply not true. Failing students would still be failing.

Cutting transportation funding to the magnet school truly hurts the poor students who can not afford the transportation to those fine schools.

BTW way to go DCPS, now let’s see if we can get some of our trouble schools up to par.

Maybe we could get congress to repeal the no child left behind mandates.

If you can read this thank a teacher. They are not the boogey men ruining our economy.

Absolutely NOTA, I have worked in a struggling school as well as an "A" school. Many of the teachers in the SS were the best of the best. They were highly trained and gave their all to their students. I'd even say some were better than a substantial number of teachers in my current school.

It's easy for society, government, and parents to play the blame game and point fingers. No one wants to take their share of responsibility.
