Let the games begin

Big Bear's Realtors are getting down and dirty at the "mansion" and they want you to join them. This worthy benefit has been held every year since 1987 with proceeds going to Meals on Wheels and the food pantries of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and Believers Chapel.

This year the Robertson Mansion has been donated by the current owners for an evening of feasting and frolic. Enjoy this signature property and the festivities——dancing to a live band and games: basketball, croquet, bocce ball, pingpong, foosball and tennis (bring your own racquets).

Tickets are $25 and include all you can eat, a drink and the games. All proceeds go to the charities. An evening at the mansion is Saturday, July 9, from 4:30 p.m. until .... Paddling the lake

Come on up and paddle. The fourth annual Big Bear Paddlefest is Saturday and Sunday, July 9-10, and this year its more accessible to the public.

This year the event moves from the North Shore to Swim Beach at Meadow Park in Big Bear Lake. Vendors include Seda Kayaks, Hobie SUP, Necky, Old Town, Ocean Kayaks, Keen footwear, Big Bear Fishing Adventures, Hawaiian Bag Lady, Cool Toes, FRS, Christie Vos Jewelry and more.

Clinics are July 9 with sessions in SUP Yoga, beginner paddling for kids only, and adult beginner and advanced paddling. Clinics begin at 7:30 a.m. and continue through early afternoon on Saturday.

Spectating is also a little easier with the 5K kayak, canoe and stand-up paddleboard races taking place in the bay just outside the Swim Beach parameters. Stanfield Cutoff is the place to watch the 10K paddle and parts of the 20K paddle around the lake on July 10.

The 20K around-the-lake race begins July 10 at 7 a.m. followed by 10K race at 8 a.m. and the 5K race at 10 a.m. The kids race is free. Course maps are available at www.bigbearpaddlefest.com . Swim Beach is at 41220 Park Ave, Big Bear Lake.

The second app in this series, Wonders of Old:Medieval Timeline , currently available. Along the (more simplified) timeline are labels (and some map pics) of key happenings. Tap the label and a map of the event opens up. The maps are clearly labeled and have drop pins at points of interest. Tap a pin and information about the location, related to the event, opens up. You can pinch and spread to zoom in and out. These interactive maps can be used along with your pen and paper mapwork you do for your journals, or as a standalone enrichment activity.
