Time is running out to apply for The Military Injury Relief Fund
The Military Injury Relief Fund ( MIRF ), which was created by House Bill 66 in June 2005, provides grants to Ohio military personnel injured while serving in country under Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) or Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). Eligible veterans include those who have a combat-related injury including Post Traumatic Stress Injury (PTSD). MIRF is funded by donations, and the program works on a first come first served basis. MIRF grants have been reported to be in the range of $500 to $1,000. The current fiscal year deadline is June 30th and time is running out. The simplest way to receive the grant is by sending in the following documents: MIRF application , W-9 Form (signed in blue ink), a photo copy of the applicants DD 214 (or DD 215), photo copy of Ohio drivers license, utility bill, rental agreement, officially filed federal or state tax form or military Leave and Earnings Statement (LES), The final document needed is one which proves injury while serving in country under Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom. The following is acceptable documentation for Proof of Injury documents: award certificate for the Purple Heart Medal, documentation of any incident in which the service member is injured while receiving hazardous duty, combat, or hostile fire pay, or Veteran Affairs award letter for including service-connected disability incurred while serving in country under Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom. I advocate that applicants visit their county's Veterans Service Office or contact Ohio Job & Family Services: Veteran Services at 1 (888) 296-7541, option 5 to ensure application is in order before submitting since situations vary from veteran to veteran.

What is MIRF?
The Military Injury Relief Fund (MIRF), created by House Bill 66 in June 2005, provides grants to soldiers injured while serving in country under Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) or Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). Eligible veterans include those who have a combat-related injury including Post Traumatic Stress Injury (PTSD).
The intent of the program is to help returning injured veterans and their families make ends meet upon a veteran’s return home – particularly since VA disability determinations can often take some time, and these families can be left in financial limbo during that process. Injured veterans’ families can also incur a lot of travel and lodging costs traveling to see their loved one who may be admitted to a VA hospital far from his or her hometown.
