Budding Weymouth cake makers challenged to bake-off

BUDDING cake makers in Weymouth will be challenged to a bake off this month with the town’s mayor.

Mayor, Councillor Graham Winter, and Mayoress Mrs Mary Jordan-Winter will be visiting YOU’s Pottery Lane Service on Wednesday to settle a long-standing dispute between young people and staff – who bakes the best cake?

The bake off idea is the brainchild of YOU Manager, Andy Cosma who thought young people would welcome the chance of being king of the cakes.

Resident Laura Sanderson said: “I’ve been trialling a number of different cakes with staff.

“I’m feeling confident but it sounds like there’s going to be some tough competition out there.”

Pottery Lane Services provide support to vulnerable young people living in Dorset by providing life skills training including confidence building and cooking to people from often complex backgrounds.

The centre recently had a visit from celebrity chef Lesley Waters to promote the bake-off event.

Appropriately named staff member Sally Cake said: “I don’t mean to brag about my baking skills but it won’t be a difficult choice for the Mayor and Mayoress I’m sure.

“I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s entries on the day.”

During the event teams and individuals, including residents and staff, will be putting forward their best baking achievements.

Entrants from services across Dorset, including services from Bridport, Weymouth, Dorchester and Sherborne are all expected to enter.

Deputy Manager, Jacqui Redfern said: “Having the Mayor of Weymouth and Portland judge the competition is, quite literally, the icing on the cake.

“We work really hard to improve links with the borough and promote the independence of the young people who use our services. “This is a wonderful way to bring everyone together for a fun and very tasty event.”

J ust because Mardi Gras is over, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy king cake and get into the spirit!  Have you seen those neon food colorings–hot pink, lime green….they scream Easter.  So, have fun with pastel colors to decorate your king cake for Easter.  Maybe even put a bunny nearby.  I am so excited to have created a SUPER EASY KING CAKE RECIPE  from my trim&TERRIFIC GULF COAST FAVORITES cookbook (this book includes all your Louisiana and southern favorites ) for you to make wherever you live.  In fact, I am bringing back this recipe due to popular demand as I have had people from New York to Colorado tell me this is their favorite recipe–even better than in the bakeries.  Not sure about that, but this recipe is pantry-friendly and you can make it within minutes.  Made with crescent rolls and food colorings for the icing-you can even let the kids make this one for you.  Fun and fantistic-you will want to try this king cake recipe.

King Cake with Cream Cheese Cinnamon Filling  from Holly Clegg’s

I couldn’t wait to make the king cake with crescent rolls last night after your newsletter came out with that recipe. It was awesome. My husband said it was the best king cake he has ever had. I even shoved a plastic baby in there. I will definitely make that recipe again–in fact having another new crew of people this evening and I am making another king cake.

I am 24 years old and was recently diagnosed with pre type 2 diabetes in the fall. As soon as King Cake season came around it made me depressed to go to the stores and see the King Cakes covered in sugar and filled with overly sweetened fillings that I shouldn’t be eatting. I was SO happy to see your lower fat, lower sugar recipe on your blog (the cresent roll one) I made it tonight and it was AMAZING! It was easy to make and delicious. You are my new hero! Thank you so much! Sincerely, Kourtney Davison p.s. my whole family loved it too! It was a big hit! My sister in law from NEW ORLEANS said it’s the best she’s ever had!
