Eli Young Band gets to return fans' appreciation

They quickly devoured "Crazy Girl," a single that debuted at No. 1 in Billboard magazine as well as on iTunes after its May 3 release. It's a precursor to the group's fifth album ("Life at Best"), due out in August.

"It's been the fastest-rising single we've ever had," said Jones, whose band performs today during a "listener-appreciation concert" at Stockton's Weber Point Events Center. "Especially the first two weeks. After that, radio starts to pick it up and our fans help increase our visibility."

The single was purchased or downloaded 100,000 times during its first three weeks.

Today's free concert, staged by Modesto's KAT Country (103.3 FM) radio station, includes country-music (and radio) staples Lee Ann Womack, 44, from Jacksonville, Texas; Mark Chesnutt, 47, from Beaumont, Texas; and Emerson Drive, a five-piece band from Grand Prairie, Alberta, Canada.

They're joined by newer acts like Jennette McCurdy, an 18-year-old singer-actor from Garden Grove, and David St. Romain, 31, who's from Baton Rouge, La., and gained national exposure on TV's "Nashville Star" talent show.

Jones, 31, and the 11-year-old Eli Young Band fit that talent demographic, too.

"Yeah," said Jones as he waited for the group's flight to depart San Antonio for the West Coast on Thursday. "In country music, there's a special connection with the fans through radio. Anything we can do to improve that, we'll do it."

Being from Texas, "any way we can expand our circle by touring we do it. We get to the West Coast as much as we can. Any reason we can, we come out there."

The band is scheduled to play a 35-minute set as part of its trip to San Jose, Long Beach and Stockton.

"Crazy Girl," a melodic and twangy mid-tempo ballad written by Nashville pros Lee Brice and Liz Rose, is "really just a love song," said Jones. "It's good. There are so many themes you can write about. Any time you find one that's written a little differently, that's good."

The accompanying video's dreamscape-like backdrop involves finding release from mental and emotional problems.

The five-song, extended-play "Crazy Girl" single can be downloaded now. All the tunes will be included on August's "Life at Best.
