Pervert dubbed the 'Pied Piper of New Moston' - Manchester Evening ...

A child molester dubbed the ‘Pied Piper of New Moston’ has been jailed for four-and-a-half years after admitting a catalogue of sex crimes.

Shop worker Kevin Devine was given the nickname by people who noticed he was always surrounded by children.

Unknown to the parents who trusted him, Devine, 57, was a convicted paedophile who preyed on young boys.

Manchester Crown Court heard that Devine ‘wormed his way’ into the affections of his victims’ families. He was even trusted to bathe one of his victims and another was abused by Devine during a day trip.

Devine – who pleaded guilty to 14 counts of indecent assault on two boys – abused youngsters at a swimming pool. He was eventually banned from one baths after being caught in a cubicle with a naked boy.

Devine, from New Moston, was on probation for child sex offences when he began abusing the first of the two victims.

Speaking of the first boy, who was molested for four years, Andrew Nuttall, prosecuting, said: “The effect upon him appears to have been considerable. He became short-tempered and violent. Eventually he felt it should not happen to any other child. It’s significant this defendant was known as the Pied Piper, as he always had children with him.”

Devine began a five-year campaign of abuse against another boy in the 1990s. He won the trust of the youngster’s mother and by the time a relative noticed a change in his behaviour, the boy had been molested by Devine on more than 50 occasions.

Devine was finally arrested last year. He said ‘I’m sorry, mother’ as he was led away by police. Alison Mather, defending, said Devine had ‘no recollection’ of the offences, but accepted his guilt. She said he had severe learning difficulties and sought the company of children because they were ‘the only people who seemed to understand him’.

Judge Clement Goldstone QC, sentencing, told him: “This was a breach of trust which was both flagrant and repeated. I’m satisfied that you sought to groom those young boys for your own sexual gratification.”

There was applause in the public gallery when Devine was sentenced. He will serve two-thirds of his jail term, rather than the usual half, because his crimes pre-date changes in the law. He will remain on licence until 2019, is barred from going near boys under the age of 16, and is banned from swimming pools and water parks for life by an order.
