News Herald staff nets multiple awards at contest
The Kilgore News Herald staff returned from the Texas Press Association Summer Convention this weekend with three first place plaques, six other awards and a commitment to do even better next year.The awards cover a wide range of categories – from page design to column writing to sports coverage and ad design – and include a 2nd place finish overall among other semiweekly newspapers with a circulation of 4,000 or fewer.
Publisher Bill Woodall said he’s been a part of other newspapers that have done well in particular categories at various times but has never led one that netted such a variety of awards.
“This is the first time I’ve been a part of a newspaper that did this well, front to back, cover to cover,” Woodall said. “I just think it really indicates that everything about our paper has gotten better in the last few years.”
From the news desk to the sports department, advertising sales, graphic designers, business office and printing press, “I feel very good about our staff right now,” he said.
The News Herald finished first in the General Excellence category after submitting complete 2010 issues from Sept. 8 and Nov. 6.
Managing Editor James Draper said finishing at the top in the General Excellence contest especially shows the strength of the paper’s entire staff.
“Everyone in the building contributes to every issue,” Draper explained. “When the judges look at a complete issue – stories, photos, ads, inserts, layout, print quality and other elements – and say you’ve done a good job, that’s something everyone here can be proud of.”
Linda Ballard, ad sales representative and author of the weekly Chit Chat column, also won a first place plaque for two columns from 2010.
In page design, the newspaper finished first with section fronts of news, features, sports and commentary from the month of November.
Staff writer Aaron May took a second place finish in feature photography with his pictures of the Kilgore College Rangerettes and of a local boy and his pet chick.
Draper and former staff writer J. Louise Larson shared a second place award for news writing, with judges praising Larson’s “solid piece of reporting” on the arrest of the East Texas church arsonists and Draper’s “appropriate balance” on a story covering a local right-to-privacy lawsuit.
