This serene farm in Alfonso
MANILA, Philippines -- The town of Alfonso in Cavite is just a short drive away from Tagaytay. It seems to be turning into a tranquil refuge for those who think Tagaytay is getting too crowded for comfort. The town doesn’t have a scenic view of Taal Lake but its terrain is also hilly, the landscape woodsy, and the climate is also quite chilly. These attributes are enough for those who want to escape the madding crowd of Metro Manila.
Even the prolific landscape designer Shirley B. Sanders has built a garden in Alfonso. And like her previous projects, this garden is a showcase set in a sprawling, hilly property located on the town’s outskirts. Sanders says she built the garden for an old friend and client who already has a rest house in Tagaytay. Sanders designed the garden in the Tagaytay house several years ago but this client came calling again. “Evelyn and her husband bought a farm in Alfonso, and they asked me to landscape a portion of the property,” says Sanders.
The farm, Sanders explains, complements the vacation house the client has in Tagaytay. “They happen to be in the construction business and the work they do can be very stressful. They’ve always wanted to have a farm which they can go to and relax in whenever they’re in the house in Tagaytay,” she says.
When the client bought the property, it was already filled with trees. It was already a farm but Evelyn also wanted to have an area where she and her family can relax. She didn’t change anything with the terrain but she had a group of traditional bahay kubos built. Each of them serves a purpose. The biggest kubo is very traditional. Made of hardwood and bamboo, its ground floor was designed to be a lanai. It has a small sala set and a mahjong table also made of bamboo. The flooring, however, is covered with ceramic tiles. The second level has a huge porch that also serves a small living room. Inside is a bedroom with two queen-sized beds. Another hut was built to serve as a formal dining area and a third was built to house the kitchen and pantry. The huts are ensconced in the Asian tropical garden Sanders designed.
Each hut is tastefully adorned with bamboo furniture and traditional Filipino accessories. “Evelyn wanted a very Filipino place. So everything in the huts are made of local materials, particularly bamboo,” says Sanders.
The owners hired a man from Maragondon, Cavite to supervise the construction of the huts. He’s said to be an expert in constructing bamboo houses and he utilizes a traditional technique in building bahay kubos. He also built and designed almost very furniture piece in the property, including the sofas, the dining tables, and chairs. “I gave him carte blanche when it came to designing the furniture,” says Evelyn. “When he was working I never interfered or looked over his shoulder. I didn’t comment on his work, I completely trusted him.
